How To Play Volleyball One-Handed

June 3, 2012 — 5 Comments

Here’s the thing: Volleyball has never been my strong-suit.

Maybe I just wasn't playing with the right people.

I like to play it and I’ve played it a lot…I’m just not very good.  I was going to say that I’m not very reliable, but that’s not really true.  You can rely on me to serve and spike well, and to struggle when it comes to bumping and setting.  Bumping is the hardest.  You have to hit the ball just right around your wrist or forearm to have any control and most of the time that hurts like the dickens.  And what’s that mean, anyway?  The dickens?

One thing I’m really good at, though, is trash-talking.  You can hear my friend Jessica giving me the business at the end of the video below, but that’s only after I dropped this on her:

“How’s your throat, Jess?”

“Fine, why?”

“Because it’s about to be sore from me SPIKING THE BALL DOWN IT.”

“Okay.”

She was so rattled.

Enjoy!

What is so great about you, Ryan, is that you have an impish sense of humour which includes making fun of yourself too.

I reckon with much more practice and much less self-deprecation you could feature in the American Paraolympic Volleyball One-Armed Squad 🙂

Why do all thjose folk with you look so much younger than yourself though? I assume you play with folk of your own generation ..

  3. I have a pretty bad arm injury that causes me to be unable to move my dominant arm (the elbow) for sometimes weeks at a time. Here’s what I can’t figure out: how do I put my hair in a ponytail??? I always have to have friends do it for me. And when I’m playing soccer with only guys that can get weird. I know you don’t need this skill, Ryan, but have you heard from anyone about it? Or does anyone have ideas/experience?

  4. I’m 16 and currently playing high school volleyball. I’m alright I guess, but it inspires and motivates me so much to see that I’m not the only one out here that’s not letting my “disability” impair me from doing what I love.
