How To Cut Steak In A Restaurant One-Handed

February 17, 2012 — 8 Comments

My wife and I went out for dinner on Valentine’s Day and I splurged for a steak.

“Honey?” I asked as I held up my phone. She was actually more into it than I was. I get super self-conscious taking pictures at restaurants, so a video was even more of a challenge.

Anything for the LOH Nation, though.

Sorry about how dark the video is, but hopefully you can still see how I did it.

And don’t worry, I do still plan on making another steak-cutting video with better lighting.

  1. THANK YOU! My daughter is 5 so not cutting steaks yet, but I’ve been wondering how to teach her to cut when the time comes…didn’t think it would work so well to hold the knife with short arm, but you proved me wrong! When she’s stumped on how to do something, I usually attempt it one handed to show her it can be done (and if I can’t it usually gives her enough food for thought to modify what I tried) but now we can pick your brain too, this is awesome! Thanks for sharing!

    • That’s a great idea, Paula! I’m sure it’s helpful for your daughter. And feel free to pick my brain all you want! 🙂

      • OK, my daughter wants to know how to put her hair into a pony tail in the back…any thoughts on that one?! I haven’t come up with a good answer yet. Maybe you can get a cool halloween wig and see what you come up with for another blog post? 😀

  2. Paula – we have a 4 year old with one hand. for christmas we bought her and her sisters a knork. It is a knife fork combination and she can cut some of her food with it. It is tough with steak though and some things her hand is just not strong enough for yet.

Ryan- I just found your page tonight, so looking forward to browsing and gaining some wisdom as we teach or help her learn to do things.

  3. Hey, Thanks! I lost my dominant right arm on new years eve and I’ve had to figure out new ways to do most things. I see I need to involve my stump more as it gets less tender.

Do you not use a prosthesis? I’ve been wondering what to get to help me with outdoorsy things I like to do.

    • I’m sorry to hear about your loss, Judy. But, I’m glad you found us. 🙂

I don’t use a prosthesis (search “prosthesis” and read the post I wrote about it), but I know there are TONS of options available to you!
